Nextalk Inc. Joins VLTI Team
December 14, 2007
The Canadian Association of the Deaf – Association des Sourds du Canada is pleased to announce an agreement with Nextalk Inc. to provide technology to support CAD’s Visible Languages Translation Initiative (VLTI) interpreter service. Nextalk Inc. is the designer and manufacturer of NTS text service software and is a leader in the production of communications technology targeted to Deaf communities.
As part of the planned VLTI interpreter service, the Canadian Association of the Deaf – Association des Sourds du Canada will establish a national call-centre service to deliver sign language interpretation through the Internet. This initiative will facilitate communication in situations like banking, voting, or making purchases by accessing interpreters remotely and on-demand. Funded by a grant from Industry Canada, this system would be placed in a variety of locations including banks, shopping centres, or government offices.
“Nextalk’s NTS system is the best in the industry for TTY at a corporate level,” said Rick Sinclair, VLTI Program Manager. “With the addition of remote interpreter and text to its TTY capacity, it will allow us to offer a complete accommodation product to CAD-ASC clients for this service. It is not just another interpreter service, it is a full remedy for their obligations under the CHRA and AODA legislation. Nextalk Inc. is the number one supplier of this type of product, and they are great people to work with.”
“I have personally experienced no fewer than 14 incidents in the past month alone where I couldn’t proceed with a meeting because no interpreters were available,” said Jim Roots, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of the Deaf – Association des Sourds du Canada. “With VLTI, there will always be interpreters available at the touch of a videophone!”
