Parent Information Report: Hearing Parents and Their Deaf Child

Ninety percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents who usually have little, if any, prior exposure to deafness. They must be deliberately and systematically taught language because they lack the medium through which language is normally acquired, i.e. through hearing. This project identifies significant factors in the parental decision-making process and gaps in access to full and balanced information. It also identifies possibilities for ensuring a healthier and more holistic approach to deafness on the part of parents, children and professionals.
